World Masters Athens June 2026 – Andy Whittell
Race 1 9th Day one lead first 3 legs, didn't cover second boat close enough last work to windward. The Italian went on to win. I got run down by a pack of boats downwind and finished 9th
Race 2 15th Second race poor start, still very variable winds 60 degree shifts. Lost ground on final dead run to finish 15th.
Race 3 20th Third race sailed in sw wind, good start went left up first beat but more pressure on the rht side. Managed to finish 20th.
Race 4 23rd Fourth race in sw wind was abandoned near top pin in dying breeze. Sailed well about 10th when race abandoned. After about 1 hour waiting, sea breeze SE 10knots of wind. Fourth race resail, poor start port tacked fleet out to right in clear air. Looked ok nearing top mark on starboard but those on left approaching top mark got a nice lift and pressure. Second work sailed left side but no real gain. Finished well back 23rd. This is my current drop. At this point 18th overall out of 27.
Race 5 17th Only one race this session sw light winds. 5-7 knots. Thunder storm race 6 postponed.
Race 6 15th Three races this session 6,7,8. Again very light 5-12 knots. The lighter sailors all at front of fleet. Forced to take out right in clear air with the CAN leader. Still left side came out ahead. Decided to go left next upwind and made ground.
Race 7 25th Same light winds again. Started 6 boats back from pin, not a great start and found it hard to maintain my lane. Went hard left. Pressure came from right and it was all over. Battled with back markers.
Race 8 21st Same light winds again. Started middle of line. Again went out right again left seemed to pay again. Battled with back markers.
Race 9 12th Worked out by now current west to east. Only found out but accident on Athens weather site. Went hard left into shallow water less current affect. Then port and current took me up to mark. In top 10. Hard left upwind again. Held on to 12th. Behind Tim Law of GBR.
Race 10 20th 8-12 knots. Fully hiked out maybe 3 times. Went hard left again. Poor positioning up wind. Not clear wind in some patches. Should have tacked out but in the slop you stopped every tack. Hung on to 20th.
Race 11&12, 20th then 23rd. Last race had first upwind leg collision while on port. Only saw at last minute unfortunately 720 turn required. Made up ground from last and passed 4 boats. No room for error at all. 10-14 knots waves in a slop. Went left but middle seemed better. I made no real gain. Needed fuller sail to get through waves. The last days results meant I dropped from 19th to 20th on count back with an American.
Overall, a very well run regatta. The positives was leading race 1 for three legs where I out sailed everyone in up to several 40 to 60 degree shifts. When I was in the lead I failed to pick pressure on the right upwind 4th leg and should have covered the Italian who went right and on to win. A lesson learned here. Fleet positioning was important approaching top mark and clear lanes upwind which I couldn’t have done any better. For the remaining 11 races, 4 finishes in top 17 and 7 below. Even though the results weren’t what I was hoping for, I came away with a clearer idea of where I want to go next and what I need to focus on in training moving forward. The negatives were my difficulty to adapt to sailing in a chop off the start line and holding my lane. Downwind whilst my technique was good I was too cautious of rule 42 as yellow flag penalties handed out appeared inconsistent in sloppy wave conditions. A top Australian sailor was yellow flagged twice in one race and there is no appeal. I felt lighter sailors had an advantage in 5-10 knot wind range compared to my 87 kilos. I must trim down my weight next time I go to Greece.
Thank you to ILCAWA for supporting my participation in the World Masters in Greece.
